Examinations are an essential part of your studies and a prerequisite for successful graduation. On this page you will find regulations and exam dates.

Your Exam Results

Grades for module examinations will be announced electronically via the AlmaWeb study portal. You can look up your grades in your personal account in AlmaWeb as soon as they have been entered and published there by the responsible lecturers or their office.

Module registration = Exam registration

The module registration at the beginning of the semester is equivalent to the exam registration. If you do not wish to take an examination, you must deregister from the module in good time. However, you will then also not be able to take part in the repeat examination.

Inability to take examinations/certificate (illness/sickness)

If you are sick on an examination date, please submit a medical certificate stating that you are unable to take the examination to the study office in person or by e-mail (studienbuero[at]chemie.uni-leipzig.de). You can find the form here or on the right-hand side of this website. Please observe the deadlines as detailled in the FAQ below. With the certificate, please also provide your matriculation number and the exam you are unable to attend. Please name your attachment correctly. In some cases, PDF documents with illegible names cannot be forwarded via the university account.

The certificate will then be stored for you in AlmaWeb and you will be automatically registered for the repeat examination. If you are ill on the first date of the semester, you must take part in the repeat exam (if offered). The one-year deadline does not apply in this case.

Please note: A simple sick note (“yellow/pink notice” in electronic or in paper form) no longer is sufficient!

Neue Regelungen zu Attesten (ehemals Krankschreibungen)

From January 1, 2025, a medical certificate confirming the inability to take examinations due to illness will be required in accordance with Section 36 (10) of the Saxon Higher Education Act. A simple sick note (“yellow/pink notice”) is not sufficient!

As part of the change in the law, Leipzig University provides a form to prove inability to take examinations due to illness (Link zum PDF), which is limited to the necessary information required by examination law.  The medical certificate can also be issued informally, as long as it contains the required information. The student declaration for withdrawal/cancellation due to illness or missing an examination due to illness or the interruption of processing times can be found on the 2nd page of the form. This declaration can also be made informally.

The form does not request information on the description of the health impairment or the exact diagnosis.

However, the legal regulations stipulate that further information on the health impairment may be requested in exceptional cases, in particular if

  • students are conspicuously often or conspicuously often only unable to take certain examinations,
  • a prior announcement of the inability to take examinations would appear to be abusive,
  • the inability to take examinations has been determined by a doctor who has become conspicuous due to the frequency or manner of the certificates of inability to take examinations issued by him or her

or

  • the assumption of doubt is justified on the basis of other evidence.

You will be informed if a qualified medical certificate and, in case of doubt, an official medical certificate with further information on the health impairment is required in your case.

The submission of the new certificate is not based on the examination date or submission date of an examination performance, but on the date of entry (initial certificate) or the continuation of the inability to take the examination (subsequent certificate).

In concrete terms, this means that if the doctor determines that you are still unable to take an examination in 2024 (up to and including 31.12.2024), the certificate of incapacity to take an examination due to illness that was previously accepted for your degree program applies. If the doctor determines that you are unable to take the examination on or after January 1, 2025, the new form must be used.

The medical certificate is required for

  • examinations that take place on a specific examination day, usually no later than the day of the examination (e.g. examination date)
  • for examinations with longer processing times (e.g. term papers) within the processing time

issued by the doctor.

The form with both completed and signed declarations must be submitted immediately, i.e. no later than the fourth working day after the doctor's visit, to the Student Office or the relevant contact person for internships.

You must pay the fees for issuing the medical certificate, qualified medical certificate or official medical certificate. Please ask your treating doctor for the amount of the fees.

Please note that

  • in the teacher training courses, a certificate of incapacity to work is still sufficient for non-attendance at school due to illness (practical school studies). However, if examinations are to be taken during the same period, the form for proof of incapacity to take examinations due to illness (medical certificate) and student declaration must also be submitted.
  • for state examinations, different proof requirements may apply due to state or federal regulations.

Regulations for Failed Exams

According to the examination regulations, failed module examinations must be repeated within one year. After this period has expired, they are considered failed for a second time. The first retake exam can still take place in the same semester.

After the exam results have been announced and you find that you have failed an exam twice, you are required to apply for permission to repeat the exam a second time at the next possible exam date (usually in the same semester). Second repetitions must be taken at the next possible examination date and can only be taken upon written application to the examination board. In practice, this means that you should send your application via e-mail to studienbuero@chemie.uni-leipzig.de (please specify your matriculation number, date of the examination and module number). You can come to the study office to pick up the permission approx. 2 weeks later

Please be sure to adhere to the repetition deadlines and inform yourself in good time at the Office of Study Affairs.

Examination Dates

Here you will find an overview of the dates for written examinations. The dates for other examinations such as oral examinations, presentations, written assignments etc. are set individually by the examiners. The information on the examinations is updated (until the end of November). Therefore, please check our website and AlmaWeb regularly. (last update: 19.11.2024)
